Best Tips:

Can not Sleep? How to get to sleep
  • Test your knowledge of trivia Did you know you can play Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit online? Just head over to their websites and you can have a game going in minutes. You can even compete with other insomniacs who are using their sleep time to play trivia games.
  • Take a hot, fragrant bath Now is a great time to draw a long, soothing tub of warm bath water. Add some bath oil or fragrant bath salts to your bath and cushion your head with a pillow. Make the mood even more relaxing by adding some new age music. Just make sure you don’t fall asleep in the bathtub and drown.
  • Watch old television reruns. Do you have a television station in your area that runs those old late night T.V. reruns like All in the Family, I Love Lucy, and Gilligan’s Island? These T.V. characters are guaranteed to make you forget about your inability to sleep. You’ll laugh so hard that sleep will be an afterthought. Cant sleep?

  • Make a list for tomorrow.
Did you know you can make a list online? There are various websites that allow you to do this and store your list online to be updated regularly. After you complete the list, you can email it to yourself and congratulate yourself on having the upcoming day planned. You may be tired the next day but at least you’ll be organized.
  • Clean out the refrigerator This is one of those jobs that you never find time to do. At 3:00 A.M., you can do it without anyone disturbing you. Your kids won’t be running in and out of the kitchen and, hopefully, your dog will be asleep and won’t be parked by the refrigerator begging for a bite of whatever happens to emerge from your overcrowded refrigerator. In the morning, you’ll feel good about yourself because you got a difficult task accomplished.
  • Read a book online There are tons of classic books in the public domain you can read online for free. Just do an online search for “public domain ebooks” and “free ebooks”. You’ll find lots of interesting reading material to fill your sleepless hours. Cant sleep?
  • Take a midnight walk Only do this if you live in a safe neighborhood. Be sure to wear reflective apparel and carry a flashlight. That being said, it can be enormously relaxing taking a stroll in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep. Take a deep breath and drink in the crisp night air, now that it’s not contaminated with auto exhaust fumes. Cant sleep?
  • Write a letter Is there someone you haven’t contacted in a long time due to time constraints? Get out a pen and pad and write a good, old fashioned letter to them. Some of your best writing can be done in the wee hours of the morning when you’re undisturbed by career and family pressures. Just be sure to read it the next morning before you send it. Sometimes your nighttime thinking can make absolutely no sense in the morning.
  • Try your hand at creative writing Some of your most creative thoughts may come late at night when you can’t sleep or in the early morning hours when you’re removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Write a poem, a song, or a story. You’ll probably feel like you’ve created a masterpiece. Be sure to read it the following morning. What sounds like a grammy caliber song at 3:00 A.M. can be a real clunker in the morning. If that’s the case, congratulate yourself for trying.

So stop tossing and turning when you can’t sleep and give one of these activities a try. There’s always time to sleep tomorrow night.

Everyday Tips:

Cant Sleep? Trouble Sleeping? Try These Everyday Tips

Sleep can be elusive for many stressed-out people, which ends up creating more stress as you wander through your days in a complete brain fog

Try these tips in your bedroom and see if you can create a better night’s sleep.

  • Turn your clock away Clocks are necessary evils in the bedroom, but there’s no reason their brightly lit digits should keep you awake. Something as simple as turning the clock away from you can allow your mind to ease off into sleep.
  • Stop light leaks Light can leak into your room from a number of places: around the edges of the curtains, under the closed door, and so on. Try to block all that out and see if your sleep improves. If you need a nightlight in your room, choose a low wattage bulb away from the bed.
  • Stay cool Keep your bedroom cooler than other parts of the house for more comfortable sleep. Turn on a fan to circulate the air or turn down your air conditioner a few degrees. Open a window if the weather permits it. Even lighter blankets can help keep you cooler.
  • Eliminate electronics Get rid of the TV in your room or cover it up at night. Leave your laptop in another room when it’s time for bed. Turn off your cell phone, or better yet, leave it next to your laptop. Electronics can disturb sleep even when they’re supposedly turned off, so eliminate these items from your sanctuary.
  • Check your mattress You may need a new mattress if you’ve had your bed for more than ten years and it’s becoming uncomfortable. Even if it’s newer, remember that our bodies change over the years and you may need more or less support at this moment in your life. If you toss and turn, a new mattress is definitely on the list.
  • Use lavender extensively right before sleep Lavender is a proven calming essential oil, and many people swear by its ability to help them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Try it directly on your pillow, under the blankets at the foot of the bed, or diffused into the air. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try any or all of these simple tips. You never know which tweak will work to send you off to dreamland!

Routine can help you sleep:

Cant Sleep? Try These Routine Tips

Sleep can be elusive for many stressed-out people, which ends up creating more stress as you wander through your days in a complete brain fog

If you don’t sleep well, chances are, it has never occurred to you that a lack of daily routine could be to blame. After all, isn’t variety supposed to be the spice of life? Well, not according to your body clock it isn‘t. In addition, following a routine can make you feel calm and relaxed, thus promoting restful sleep.

You might already be aware that going to bed at a set time each night can help you fall asleep more easily. Your circadian rhythm, otherwise known as your body clock, responds well to behaviors that take place within a similar time frame on a regular basis. However, the needs of your body clock are not restricted to your bedtime routine, as activities you repeat at a similar time during the day can also help keep your internal clock in good shape.

The type of behaviors you might benefit from carrying out at regular times include habits such as when you take a break during the day or bathe during the evening. In addition, physical activity, including exercise, domestic chores and going out to socialize are best kept to a timely routine.

If you have children who experience problematic sleep, making sure that they stick to a regular routine can help them, and probably your mood immensely. Studies show that toddlers and infants fall asleep faster and for longer periods when they follow a routine. At the same time, having a regular bedtime and pre-sleep schedule can help children feel protected and calm.

Sleep specialists suspect that adults also feel more secure and peaceful when they carry out a routine. People who engage in behavior that their psyche and body expects can literally put their mind at rest.

It’s thought that engaging in a routine can help internal chatter quieten down, as you let go of troubling thoughts for a while. If you have worries and concerns, it’s likely that they can wind you up until you are agitated when you let your mind run. However, carrying out an expected task can take your mind off unwanted thoughts while you concentrate on what you are doing.

Once you have developed a set routine to follow, you will find that a good night’s sleep naturally fits into your schedule in a healthy way. Carrying out behaviors and habits when your system expects you to can make sleeping less of a struggle and help you relax and unwind.
